Please join us Thursday May 2 from 7-10PM for the opening reception of ‘Unreleased’, presented as part of the Scotiabank CONTACT Festival

2FIK’s latest body of work “Unreleased” explores the gap that can exist between a person’s sense of belonging within a culture, and the culture’s opinion of that person. In this work, 2FIK performs multiple visions of “self,” while exploring the positive and negative prejudices that accompany visual perceptions of the “other.” This exhibition presents a series of dramatic tableau photographs in which characters from different cultures meet and evolve.

This exhibition marks a special occasion in gallerywest history. The artist 2FIK is gallerywest’s inaugural exhibitor (“Chosen Identities”, 2010) and in many ways has contributed to the standard of success gallerywest is able to achieve as a space for contemporary art through his own standard of excellence and fearlessness.

Since October 2010 gallerywest has housed over twelve shows a year and continues to provide an environment for unique conversations and experiences with art and community.

Perspectives is a two-part exhibition featuring work by OCAD University’s graduate candidates in the Interdisciplinary Master’s in Art, Media and Design program. Incorporating interdisciplinarity as a method, the work shares a conceptual approach rather than a common theme. The result is a panorama of work produced over the past six months.

Spring is commonly associated in art and literature with hope and new life, with the physical presence and untested promise of new life, with actual and metaphorical fresh starts. It seems a time of joyful innocence, of fresh energy and awakenings. Spring has a darker side, too, and this dark side forms the essence of Michael Dent’s newest show, entitled Prints Of Darkness.

Spring can also be seen as tragi-comic, pratfall slapstick, as we witness the yearly parade of bold and bright young critters as they become willing, unwitting fodder for car tires or failed flights.The work documents life’s undeniable cruelty to the innocent, the adventurous, the fearless and the brave.

The viewer may also understand that every bit of rotting flesh becomes, in time, the groundwork and the food for future dreams.
